Media education
The media education activities of News Media Finland and its member newspapers support children and young people in adopting a critical and active relationship with the media. We help teachers utilise news media in classrooms and produce media education materials for various age groups.
We organise several national campaigns each year (including the News Week, a collaboration between schools and newspapers, at the beginning of the year, and a campaign for the International Literacy Day at the beginning of the autumn semester) and conduct research on young people’s everyday use of media.
The activities particularly emphasise journalistic education; we focus on explaining the rules of journalism and highlighting the significance of reliable media content.
Our operations have a long history. Finnish newspapers have engaged in media education for more than 50 years, boasting the third-longest history of such education in the world.
All the materials developed for teachers can be found at uutismediakasvatus.fi. Most of the materials are only available in Finnish.
